Post Herpetic Neuralgia
Post Herpetic Neuralgia is nerve pain associated with the varicella virus (chicken pox virus). Once contracted this virus lives in a persons body forever. The virus itself stays dormant in nerves next to the spinal cord until triggered later in life. Once triggered it produces shingles. The shingles outbreak is usually only temporary but a small number of patients will develop pain even after the shingles outbreak itself has cleared. This is described as a painful burning, stinging, tingling or pins and needles sensation.
